There are various reasons for the transportation of goods between countries. One of those reasons is e-commerce; therefore, even small businesses need international transportation and shipping. However, you should know that international shipping is way different and more complicated than regular shipping. Therefore, you should look for a reliable international shipping company.
Below, we have listed the seven steps of international shipping!
- Export haulage: It is the first part of the shipping process, which involves the movement of the cargo from the shipper’s to the forwarder’s premises. Usually, the forwarder’s premises is an export consolidation center where they have their people or nominated agents. The goods generally move via road, rail, or both.
If the shipper is responsible for the transportation, they will likely arrange it through a local transportation company. However, if the consignee is responsible for the same, they are likely to use a freight forwarder who can provide export haulage as a part of their international shipping services.
Remember, handling the cargo at the shipper’s premises and offloading the truck at the forwarder’s premises are not part of export haulage. Hire a company that offers international shipping services for a smooth process.
Exports custom clearance: For every shipment leaving the country, there are a few custom formalities you must look after to meet the requirements. Custom clearance refers to making a declaration and submitting the required documents to the authorities. Only companies with a valid custom license can perform this and are called customs house brokers.
A freight forwarder with a valid license or an agent appointed by them can perform custom clearance. Alternatively, a customs house broker directly appointed by the shipper can also perform this process.
You must complete the customs clearance process before the cargo leaves the origin country. Or, a company that offers international freight shipping services can also do the same for you.- Origin handling: It covers physical handling and inspection of the cargo right from when itโs received at the origin warehouse till itโs loaded on a ship in a container. When the origin receives cargo, they inspect it, plan for loading, consolidate it with the other cargo, store it into a container and move it to the port where itโs loaded onto a ship.
- Ocean freight: The freight forwarder decides on a shipping line to perform the ocean freight from origin to destination. The shipping line and freight forwarder have a contract of carriage for the container. Please note that the shipper or consignee is not subject to any interaction with the shipping line.
- Import customs clearance: It can begin before the cargo arrives at the destination country and must be completed before it leaves the customs bonded area in the destination country or the destination warehouse of the forwarder or the forwarder’s agent. Look for an international shipping company that can manage this for you.
- Destination handling: As itโs for the origin, cargo handling is essential at the destination too before it is released to the consignee. Basically, it includes the movement of containers from the ship to the shore and from the port to the destination warehouse. It also involves unloading the container and preparing the cargo for the consignee.
- Import haulage: The last step of the shipping process is the final delivery of the cargo to the consignee. Import haulage covers transportation but not the unstuffing of the truck.
